This is my first year filing taxes myself. I graduated college in 2010 and been working a full time job since. My father has always filed my taxes for me, but he is no longer with me.

Back in 2010, I paid over $400 in student loan interest, but it was never deducted when my father filed my returns.

I will for sure deduct the $1000 I payed off in 2011, but just wondering it was possibly to also get a refund from the year 2010 as well. Thanks for your time, and I hope to understand more about tax filings as I continue my research.

You can file an amended return for 2010, which was the year you paid the interest. It's Form 1040X. Assuming you still have your 2010 return, 1040X is straightforward and pretty easy to prepare.

No. Each year stands on its own.

Only in interest paid in 2011 is deductible on your 2011 return.
