Can I customize iPhone Wallpaper?

So in a nutshell I'm getting an iPhone in a few months, and I'm wondering if you can put a custom wallpaper background, like on a desktop for a PC. If so, does it require any mods or can one do it legit?

Please no comments about how you think it sucks, or how much of a money pit it is.
