Can I exchange/return an opened dvd without a receipt at Walmart?

I received Supernatural Season 2 on Dvd as a gift, but when I tried watching the first disc in the box, it didn't work. I tried playing it on other systems and the disc is unreadable. I wanted to either return it for credit so I can rebuy the Dvd set in hopes of getting one with a readable disc or just simply exchanging it. Can I do this without a receipt because it was a gift and if I've already opened it? Obviously the only way I'd be able to know if the disc worked or not was to open it.
 
I just recently had to return some baby shoes to walmart with no receipt and the package was open. (the shoes were two totally different sizes!). The rule is as follows... If the package is open with no receipt you can get a store credit in the form of a gift card. If it's less than ten dollars you get the choice of cash or a gift card. Hope this helps!
