Can i install an aftermarket amp in my stock stereo?

Dont know much bout stereos and stuff but was wondering if i cud install an after market amp in my stock stereo? Will it have better sound quality and loudness or should i go ahead and get an aftermarket stereo. Only problem bout getting a new stereo is my car is standard double din. So either i get the lower mount kit which will look wierd since i'll still have the stock stereo, but just wont work. Or replace the whole component with a new double din kit, but it is more expensive. Also, what's a good amp brand to get and how many channels should i get for my stock stereo? Please Help.

Is it a Mustang by chance? Crutchfield has a kit. I'd go with new aftermarket, buy the adapters, and kits you need to install it right,
