Can I leave out mixed peel from an English cake recipe?

First of all, let me say I am English but I live in the US and I'm finding it impossible to buy the English style mixed peel anywhere (just lemon and orange peel). I can find a US version of mixed peel everywhere but it has pineapple and citron as well as green and red cherries in there. I have used it in my cake recipe but the cake tasted terrible, no wonder so many people don't like fruit cake! Anyway, I'm going to make my English Christmas Cake (yes, I'm late, should have done it back in Spetember) and I was wondering if anyone is familiar with the traditional Christmas Cake recipe and would know if the cake would taste ok without the mixed peel? I use the Be-Ro recipe in case anyone is familiar with it. I can make up the weight of the missing peel with added currants and cherries, but will the taste still be there?
I did order mixed peel from various places that said it was "English Mixed Peel" but when it arrived every single one had the citron and pineapple in them. I found lemon and orange peel sold separately online today BUT I can only get in in 48 ozs size! I can't justify paying $50 plus shipping for it.
Appreciate help from the more experienced bakers out there.
Thanks
