I know it may sound like a dumb question, however, my friends all seem to think that I'm breaking some sort of law if I take a picture of a car accident on the highway/street. For example, yesterday, a pick up truck pulled out in front of a police cruiser and they collided. On my way by, I snapped a pic of the scene. Now my thoughts are I am not breaking any rules as the media always snaps pictures and records video of almost everything. My friends don't see it this way. Next time something like this happens, I want to be sure I can legally take a pic so I can shut my friends up. Any help???

Plain sight. If you can see it with the naked eye, you can generally snap a picture of it.

What you do with the photo is another matter, such as earning an income from that photo, or publishing it without the consent of the parties involved.

When in doubt, speak to a lawyer.

There's nothing inherently improper about taking a picture of a car accident.

However, it sounds like you took the picture *while driving*, which raises other concerns about your own safe operation of your motor vehicle. If you're behind the wheel, focus on the road, or else the tense of this question might change to whether or not it's legal for others to take pictures of your accident.
