can I paint the cooking surfaces of my barbeque?

I have a gas BBQ, the housing is fine, but the cooking surfaces, which are cast iron, have become rusted. There are many BBQ/Heat resistant paints, but application descriptions seem intent on explaining hhow to paint the outside of the BBQ, and non mention whether the cooking surfaces can be painted.

The existing cooking surfaces look like the they once had a painted surface, but most that has now come off - I dread to think whether it has become party of my locally reknown tasty burgers ;o)

yes, BBQ black in a spray can home depot.....out side surface only! spray let dry, then light fire/heat it & it may smoke a little , but it lasts a long time. prep surface w/ wire brush or sand paper
