I have a 2004 Toyota Tacoma Prerunner. I think my current tires are 16", but a friend is offering to sell me brand new 17" tires for a real reasonable price.

Yeah, as long as he sells you 17" wheels too. You cannot fit 17" tires on 16" wheels!

As Long As It Has The Sam Number Lug Nuts As He Regular One You Can But Youll Need To Buy 17" Tire Treds

Yeah-but there is a downside.
If you go with those low profile tires you will lose ride quality. You will start to feel every single bump. It causes a harder ride on the suspension, causing the suspension parts to wear out much quicker.
I had 17s on my car, it looked great but the ride was terrible. I went through 2 sets of shocks within 3 years, my mechanic said that those thin tires and oversized wheels can cause your suspension parts to wear out faster. I went back to the stock 15s and it rides great.
