Whenever I put in a DVD or CD, whether it is RW or just R, Windows always gives me the option to treat it like a flash drive with a "live filesystem" or like an audio CD for a radio and give it a "mastered filesystem". So my question is can it be a live filesystem and be erasable and reusable without being an RW disc?

yes ,its possible.
you must be using windows vista/7.

i dont think its possible, cause i think on a R type disc once its on u cant write over it sorta like a lock out. RW is rewritable which can be reused. im not too sure on this either.

Um...no. Just no. DVD-Rs are write-once, then throw away if you don't want it. You cannot rewrite a DVD-R. Just get a few DVD-RWs if that's what you want, but even then it's cumbersome and limited to use a live filesystem. You want removable media with simple r/w? Get a flash drive.
