Can I return this to Walmart without a receipt?

My friend gave me a Xbox 360 wireless adapter because he didn't want it anymore. He said he bought it from Walmart but when I tried to use it, it doesn't seem to work... Can I bring it back without a receipt for a replacement/ refund? (I hear these adapters go bad often)
