Can I take my turtle out to play?

I just got her today from Petsmart. She is very healthy, but I don't know if she is old enough to tell if she IS a girl (She is about 5 inches long). She is still a little shy, so I was wondering if I can take her out YET to play with us. Or is it too early?

(P.S. I have a proper tank with good accommodations for her!)
