Can I use a smartphone on T-mobile without purchasing a data plan?

I want to purchase a phone from a store online (not T-mobile) and just swap in my SIM card.
I want to purchase a phone from a store online (not T-mobile) and just swap in my SIM card. I don't want to use internet or e-mail, just texting. If I'm able to, is there anything I should be concerned about as far as charges?

if the phone is a tmobile or unlocked phone it will work, but without a data plan you will pay a lot for internet browsing and emails

1. The phone has to be unlocked (cannot be AT&T phone)
2. You can use internet if you have wifi abilities on your smart phone. You will be limited to internet where you have wireless internet.
