my dad had a moto q phone and he didnt like it so he upgraded to another phone he gave me this phone but i cant get a plan on it because i practically drove him into debt the last time lol. will i be able to put a pay as you go chip into this phone and use it with telus mobility?

I see that you mentioned 'chip', are you thinking 'sim card'? Telus doesn't use sim cards so no it won't work on their system. Sims are used by gsm telcos like Rogers. Also,Telus will not activate ANY smartphone on pay&talk.

Hi sure you can use your Motorola Moto q mobile with telus sim only if it is unlocked one .Else if the phone is locked to some other network provider then you can't use it with telus until you unlock it .You can easily unlock your phone using sites like TheUnlockArena.com they are rendering unlock code for all mobile models at reliable cost .You first check that whether the code is available for your country and network provider .If yes then pay for it and unlock your phone then freely use it with telus or any other GSM sim ...
