Can I use the FIXMBR command in the Recovery Console to do this?

I have one hard drive with a bunch of files on it. I can't afford to lose them all and I can't back them up in any way so I was wondering if I could use my Windows XP installation disc to run the Recovery Console, then type in "FIXMBR" to fix my master boot record so that my hard drive will boot.

What I want to do is take my hard drive from one computer (Dell Dimension 3000) and put it in another PC (Compaq Presaro S6000NX). I tried before, but the hard drive crashes because of the massive hardware change. I remember a long time ago (in the time of Windows 98) that I could swap hard drives with two totally different computers and still be able to boot no problem; Windows would just install the new hardware that was found without crashing or anything.

So, say if I put my Dell hard drive into my Compaq tower, could I use the FIXMBR command to change the boot record over to the Compaq tower, or would that wreck my boot record? Also, if I choose to put the hard drive back into my Dell tower, could I do the same thing over and not wreck or corrupt anything?
