can I use the tachymeter on my Seiko watch as a normal second hand?

I have a Seiko SNA311, and it bugs me that the tachymeter hand (what would nomrally be a second hand, and is basically a stopwatch) is always straight up. Can I just start the stopwatch and have it move around like a second hand without doing any damage?
