Can I view freeview on a sky box without subscribing?

I live in England, there is a satellite dish and the cable leading into my flat. If I buy a box can I watch the free channels or do I need to subscribe.

We've got Sky, and when our subscription ran out we carried on using the box like a freeview box. There were a couple of channels that we didn't get that we should have done (Dave) didn't work at one point, but I think it does receive the digital signal, so you should be alright.
