Can i write a story about the phantom of the opera?

Its in PUBLIC DOMAIN as well as its 1925 movie, but can i write my own story with its same titles but a slightly DIFFERENT way and not get in law trouble? i looked for all laws but they seem all to complicated to understand. Im 100% sure its not against the law.

Please don't give me smart a** answers i need real legal advice here.
