Can leaving vents to wood stove cause carbon monoxide in house?

We are visiting friends and my husband who has no idea how to use a wood stove started it up and ran it for about 3 hours with both the flue and the vents open. This filled the house with a smoke smell. I then noticed that this place doesn't even have co detectors just smoke and I'm worried it may have caused the house to fill with CO. Any in site? Needless to say he's on his way to 24 hour walmart to pick up a co detector, but i was wondering before he got back if it could be a problem.
