Can my professor refuse to let me make up a quiz because I went to court?

My professor states in her syllabus that there are no make up quizzes. I was absent yesterday during the quiz because I had to attend my court hearing that was scheduled during class time. She said she will not let me make up the quiz. I have my court papers as proof.

Are professors allowed to do this? What should I do? Missing this quiz will greatly affect my grade.
The quizzes are pop quizzes so you never know when they will be. I contacted the professor previously about this, and she said she didn't know if there would be a quiz that day and that if there was one, she would not let me make it up.

Yes they can. You are no longer in high school. You should have made other arrangements with your teacher prior to class and you might have been able to work something out. After the fact is too late. If I was a teacher and that was my rule I would stick to it and not let you make it up unless you came to me before and asked about it... then I would set a time for you to make it up. Court dates you know about in advance, death in the family or other serious unexpected situations are different.

She can do whatever she wants to do. I know a professor that won't even let you make up tests if you are in the hospital!

Like the other post said, you can appeal to the dept. chair, but chances are they will stick by the professor for two reasons:

1. It is clearly stated in the syllabus; you chose to remain in the course knowing those rules.
2. While they say they are there to mediate an agreement between a professor and student, they are really there to get the student to accept what the professor is saying (back up the professor).

You can always appeal to the head of the department.

Send an email explaining your situation, offer to show proof.

Keep at it, don't give up.
