the once-ler, Once-ler's relatives, Lorax, swanee swans, Brown Barbaloots, hummy fish, Truffula trees, small boy. In your assignment answer the following questions:
why do we never see the once-lors or his relatives faces?
where are some specific places where this has happend/ishappening
what is ment by the final message - "unless"?
The Lorax – Environmental assignment
The message the ‘Lorax’ is trying to convey is that if big businesses continue to only care about profit line and don’t take heed to what damage their business is doing, then our forests, our lakes, and our environment will one day cease to exist. Our homes will cease to exist.
I believe that the once-ler in this story represents the big business that is damaging our environment. He’s too busy with “progress” he doesn’t see the destruction happening by his hand. I think that the once-ler’s relatives represent society, and maybe that’s why we never see the oncler’s or his families’ faces, because it’s hard to give a face to all of society. The Lorax obviously represents the environmentalists, or “tree hugger’s” .He’s just trying to save the Truffula trees, and the creatures that live there for they cannot speak for themselves. The swanee swans, Brown Barbaloots, and Hummy Fish all represent the life forms we are disrupting but polluting their environments and destroying their habitats. They’re all having to leave their home because once all the truffula trees are gone, waters contaminated, and the sky’s and polluted the area no longer meets their needs, and is not a safe living environment. The small boy in my opinion is the most important symbol of all. He represents future generations that will have the weight of our mistakes on their shoulders. They will be the ones to fix our mistakes. They are the ones who will have to grow up with the destruction all around them, which also ties in with the final message of “unless” which I assume means basically that unless we change our ways our world will continue to go downhill until it is no more. Unless we actually try, and follow through, our environment will continue to crumble. Unless we all stand together, and make a difference, all the creatures that inhabit this earth will eventually die. This planet we call earth will cease to be our home.
Some places that are being affected by environmental abuse are Linfen, China where residents say they literally choke on coal dust in the evenings and Haina Dominica Republic, which has severe lead contamination because of lead battery recycling.
