What's going on and how can I fix this? My car jerks in idle when I apply the brake (not emergency brake) Almost like its about to kill over. When its on and in park it doesn't do it as much (but still a little bit). The rpm needle jumps between 0 and 1 when it does this irregular jerking and a little bit between 1 and 2 (closer to two). It also jerks a little when I am passing 40 mph. Its a 1995 Saturn LS 4 door 4 cyl sedan. Oil and all fluids have been filled and checked. It does it whether my car is full of gas or not. It just passed saftey and emissions too. Any help is appreciated.

in might be the fuel pump of fuel filter. another thing you may want to check is the carb.

I have 2 suggestions. first I"d go ahead and give her a tune up. Plugs wires distributor cap and fuel filter. If this has already been done then sounds like your TPS switch (TPS = throttle position sensor).

The TPS will make the car jerk around and the car is old enough that this could be the problem, that is if you have done the tune up and it didn't fix it. If you have not done the tune up then do this first as a car that old is due anyway.

Good luck

Yeah the car doesn't actually have a carb so the first answer is by a person who should not have answered a question in the car section! Anyways it sounds to me like a computer issue and suggest you take it to a mechanic for scanning, if it was lacking fuel then it shouldn't jerk under braking since you already released the gas, it would jerk under heavy acceleration if it was lacking gas. It sounds to me like the fuel computer is shot and is not properly metering the gas, I could also be wrong which is why you need to visit a mechanic since it is a hard problem to properly diagnose over the internet.

If this only happens when you step on the brake, then theres something wrong with the braking system. Its most likely a vaccuum leak in the brake assist part. You may have to replace the master cylinder, its not too expensive, but I am not sure what they are charging for it today. (400.00?)

Can't be the fuel filter as suggested.
