Can storing recorded DVD-R discs this way mess them up?

I have recorded some movies on DVD-R disks and some of them got stored with the written side touching each other, face to face. Now one of the movies that was working fine initially is not able to be read any longer. I didn't think that DVD-R disks have any magnetic properties to be written, am I correct? Or could they have gotten messed up by storing them that way?
