Can the belief in a religion become so strong, that it becomes the religion itself?

I think many religious zealots are more interested in the dogma and rituals than in the principles behind it. The Catholic church is an example.
 
In other words, can it become so stong that that it gives the religion validity?

-Not my question, something somebody asked me today, I wanted your opinion, friends.
Not as such the religion itself, but rather such a powerful belief pattern that it influences the curve of things.
