can you buy a to go tmobile phone and insert your sim card from a regular plan phone?

I've heard the you can go to walmart and buy like a $15 pay as you go phone and insert your normal sim card from my contracted phone and it will work. I was just wondering if this is really true. Becuase it would be cheaper to go buy one of these then ordering over online

I also have the my fav 5 so i dont' know how that works either
