I have 2 questions actually

1) Can you get WIFI internet if you live in a rural area?

I live in an area where I cannot get high speed Internet or DSL just dial up

I have a laptop that has WIFI and a LINKSYS WRT54GL wireless router, they can connect (wirelessly) but I cannot connect to the Internet

2) Also can you connect to a WIFI hotspot like Starbucks or McDonalds from home? These hotspots are only less than a half of mile away from my house and I just signed up for AT&T but I cant connect

Sorry if its too much to ask, i'm still very new at this WIFI stuff

Thanks everybody

No.

The Wifi signals are not powerful enough to travel more than a few dozen feet.

The mcDonalds wifi only works in the building, and maybe in the parking lot. The signal is too weak.

You wont' be able to get high speed internet or wifi unless the infrastructure is brought in - i.e. fiber optic or cable. Wifi simply serves as a hot spot from a hard wire to allow multiple users , within a very short range.

You're not going to get a WiFi connection from a half mile away. You would pretty much need to be in the same building, or at least in the parking lot outside.
Have you looked into a cellular internet provider?
The hardware is fairly cheap these days ($50 or less) and some providers will give you the hardware if you sign up for their service.
The monthly fee is just a little more than a regular DSL connection.
Good luck!
I hope this helps!
