Can you help with a stereo install on 2006 dodge durango?

I have a 2006 Durango - the factory stereo is dead - the buttons wont respond, so I want to switch it with an aftermarket unit. I would like to use a harness - but the harnesses are running in the 75-150$ range, much more than I want to spend. Can I just direct wire it without this harness? To be clear the harness they are selling has a block attached to it, for something to do with the accessory I was told. Please let me know.
