Can you keep your Dish Network receiver if you cancel their services?

I am going to cancel my service to Dish Network and I need to know if they will let you keep the receiver or not.
I understand I won't be able to watch TV on it, but I can still watch all the movies and shows I recorded.
I've seen several Dish and Direct TV receivers at thrift stores, so I assume they will let you keep the recievers, but I am not sure...that's why I'm asking.
