I'm thinking of getting an xperia mini, but I don't want it to auto connect to the 3g network seeing as I will get charged a bunch :P I would like to use only wifi, is this possible?

Is there any way to turn off 3g on the phone?
 
Yes. Call the network and they will disable packet data. You'll be able to access wi-fi, but you won't be able to send mms or browse the net.
