Can you put front brakes on a bike that only have coaster brakes?

I'm thinking about buying a cheap beach cruiser, but the only thing is the bike only has coaster brakes & i would need the front brakes for going down hills by where i live. I want to know if it's possible to put front brakes on & how what will I need & about how much would it cost?
