Can you remember this book about wilderness survival?

It was about a teenager who runs away from his dad by stowing away on a plane that crashes in the deep wilderness. The pilot dies but the teenager manages to survive an entire winter in an old cabin. He sort of welds a hatchet out of metal from the plane and eventually learns to store meat in old cans he finds. When he is finally found he doesn't seem to want to leave and his father (who came to find him) tells him he understands how the north can grow on a person. As far as I know this book is NOT Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. Anyone remember what it is?
