can't open rear gate on 2002 Jeep Liberty?

I am having trouble opening the rear gate on my 2002 Jeep Liberty Sport. The key goes in most of the way, not all, and then it won't turn. Tried putting WD-40 on it, but that had no effect. What should be the next step?
