Car accident legality - who is liable for a demo-car?

This is an Indian laws question:

I took a demo-car for test-drive and met with an accident.

The dealer harassed me physically using goons for having damaged the car. The dealer also wanted me to pay up for the car's value minus the amount covered by his insurance (dealer claimed this would be 30% of the car's ex-showroom price). 30% of ex-showroom price for a demo-car is way high so I tried negotiating for a settlement. But the dealer tried harassing me to provide a blank cheque (I did not succumb to their pressure and did not give the dealer a blank cheque). The dealer gave up and since then I haven't heard from the dealer.

Am I liable for the car's damages, legally? (Let's assume the dealer gets to prove that I was at fault while driving - inspite of the car's steering misbehaving)

Can I sue the dealer for his acts? (Another driver who was affected in the accident is an eye-witness to this act of the dealer hitting me)

Your advise will be highly appreciated!
