Car insurance lapse payments?

My car was towed because I had a lapse of payments on my insurance. The cop told me i could get my car back in a day. My question is will i be able to get on a new insurance plan bring it to the DMV and re-register my car?

Anymore information on this topic will be great. fyi i live in CT, USA.
