Most likely the male cat is now going through puberty, and will begin spraying to mark his territory soon. I strongly advise you to get him neutered before that happens.
I always blamed our male cat for urinating on things and the horrible smell. But when our old female cat died, the urination ended and so did the smell. It could be either cat.
