CD Drive won't read CD?

It plays DVDs.
But it can't read empty CDs or CDs that I want to copy files from.
An error message pops up saying "Windows can't read the disc in drive F. Make sure that the disc uses a format that Windows recognizes. If the disc is unformatted you need to format it before using it"
I own windows 7.
There are some really important files I needed to copy from those CDs.
And the drive doesn't read it.
Help me out, please.

The laser in the drive may be gone if these disks are new but try cleaning the laser lens first you can buy kits to do that.
