Cheapest way to call to US from other countries with Verizon?

I live in the US and I am travelling to Australia from mid-December to mid-January. What's the cheapest way I can make calls to the US? I have a Skype account, but does that work over WiFi? If it doesn't, it is cheaper to use normal roaming minutes or roaming data to make the Skype call?
 
Skype does work over WiFi
data roaming is expensive, and likely not worth it if you are not connected to a WiFi hotspot

you do know... that the MAJORITY of Verizon phones won't work at all in Australia I hope. Most Verzion phones are CDMA only, and Australia doesn't have any CDMA networks.... the exception is if you have a world phone, with both GSM/CDMA support: most Blackberries, the iPhone 4s, and some of the newer smartphones.
 
Skype, it's free if you have interet. You need a webcam and a microphone and then you can talk and see each other for free.
