Cheating in exams

This was begun in the FMA forum, but I think everyone here can relate to this.

Would you cheat in your exams? Why and why not?

I'll just leave it here to boil.

No, the whole idea of sitting an exam is to test yourself. If you cheat, you fail.

exams are one thing but what about coursework....would you accept help and then not reference it?

well I didnt care about my Home Economics coursework so I pretty much nothing, made no references, used nothing to reference...

but cheat in an exam? No, its not like they are even hard enough to bother cheating in and even if they were what makes you so sure that anyone else has any better idea?

If I thought I could get away with it then I probably would. In coursework i see it constantly with faked sick notes for extensions, false excuses for extensions, copying and getting familiar with the questions on an exam paper in advance by getting friendly with people who know. Frankly I don't see tests as being some sort of challenge to me, they are just another thing put in my way to trip me up.

(Incidentally I never have cheated and I still scraped a first BUT I've seen people cruise to 2,1's by it and you begin to realise their really isn't much fairness in the world.)

I've never cheated in an exam (because I'd be so worried about being caught I'd lose any advantage I'd have gained) but at the same time, exams, particularly beyond the US High School/UK A-Level systems start losing their purpose...I mean why learn two hundred equations for an exam paper, when in real life if you needed them you would look them up in a book (obviously disciplines like medicine dont fall into this category) so to a point I see the exam and coursework system as less of a test of ability and more of a test of your ability to sit exams. It is easy to pass an exam with absolutely no knowledge about the subject if you know enough about the exam itself.

No, cheating in an exam is far to risky.

In coursework, you're not really cheating so long as you're 'giving it back' to your mates as well. You have to give to get, no?

I did a lot of my mates coursework in Uni, and got paid for it, so does that make me a cheater, or them?

Never cheated in exam conditions, as Formy says, far to risky....

I'd never cheat in exams- the risk of getting kicked out of uni... plus the fact I'd just feel bad as all the other people actually worked for their marks.

So I'll now give you all the best reason not to cheat.

I was always an honest student, did all my own work down to homework that didn't have to be turned in. I studied hard and learned what I could.

On the other hand, there is this other fellow who cheated his way through college, taking every opportunity to copy tests, hand in other peoples homework, and let other people take up the slack on projects.

I work at GE fanuc designing single board computers.

He works at a jewelry stand in the mall.

I agree with SGT. Ashida Kim for example knows little or nothing about MA and look at his pupils hehe. Realistically I would want to do poor in an exam and know more rather than get an A and know less.

Cheating in an exam in the end is cheating yourself

As a university prof, it's nice to see so much honesty among you. I've heard statistics that as many as 50% of students HAVE cheated at some point. Let it be said, I catch several every single term, and these students regret it DEEPLY. They have to repeat the course, they may be expelled, and they just plain look stupid trying to explain themselves. We've heard all the excuses, and chances are good you might get caught.

The other side, mentioned above, is that if you don't learn the material, others will quickly recognize you as a fraud, and you'll suffer for it.

The temptation to cheat when you're under pressure is great, but remember, working well under pressure is what martial artists learn to do best

This is the reason why I have mixed opinions concerning cheating (which is incidentally my own comment).

Cheat on an exam???? You've got to be kidding me! I don't criticize those who do, it's frankly none of my business, but I find it absolutely atrocious! I would never cheat on exam! What if I cheat and get a bad grade ayway? What if I get cought and sent to CSI or detention?!?! What if the answers I think are right are wrong? What about exams I can't cheat on and then my lack of studying during the whole year finally catches up to me and I fail like a final or mid-term?!?! That leads to trouble and trouble means failing tests an failing tests means failing classes failing classes means having a low G.P.A and having a low G.P.A. meand bye bye to college bye bye to college means bye bye to any hope of a future! Bleh! Cheating just all around sucks...in my opinion.

If I WANTED to cheat in a uni exam, I don't think I'd be able to. The desks are fairly spaced out, and there isn't enough time to spend trying to look around at what other people are doing. No, I'm too engrossed in the exam.
