Choosing books that will make me a better reader?

I've always read a lot, but would like to expand my horizons and read better and more critically.

I'm a senior in high school, and I've tried to read a lot of classics (Camus, Faulkner, Woolf) so I will become a better reader. However, I feel like because I'm not ready for these books, I'm not getting the full experience of them or really appreciating them.

What else can I read to become a more skilled reader? Should I go back to reading miscellaneous novels? Or should I plod through the difficult works and hope that they're helping me?

BQ: Any particular books you recommend reading before starting college?
