How come so many Christians pick and choose thing out of the bible to believe in? Like, a whole bunch are quoting things about homosexuality being bad, or evil or whatever. But there are passages that say women are inferior to men and other stuff like that but nobody really cares about that. I'm just confused as to why some think that women are equals even though this book says so, but gay people are bad. I mean the bible says both but christians don't usually agree that women are inferior.
Did I explain that good enough?
"Let the women learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression." (I Timothy 2:11-14)

"Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything." (Ephesians 5:22-24)


Ok I've read through the answers, and there are parts where the bible sort of says we are equal to men. Ok, another question if i may ask..Why does the bible contradict itself then?

we don't pick and choose we can understand and read english where others can not

Yes you explained it perfectly and I know exactly what you're trying to say.

Well to explain it, a lot of the Christians (A LOT, not all) never even glanced at their bible and have no idea what's inside. They just listen to what others tell them and agree. If their parents are against homosexuality but their mother thinks she's equal to their father, the child will only understand gays are wrong.

They sort out what they like, believe in it, and the rest is there just to fill in the pages. It's said Jesus killed pigs (animals) because they were possessed by demons who would cause humans (animals) harm.

There are many other examples of how barbaric the bible is. The bible says that women were created from and for man, meaning they should be our slaves. I don't agree with that at all. But a Christian will close his/her eyes and go on to the next paragraph which says something good about god.

I also heard that god demands that all women should be virgins at marriage and if not they should be killed. I didn't particularly check it but I've seen Christians trying to defend god about that phrase by saying it was in the old testament. I can conclude 2 things from that. One, the statement isn't written in the bible but I was right about a lot of Christians not reading the bible, or two, it is written in the bible and Christians close their eyes saying it's the old version.

It's up for you to decide. Read the whole bible if you want and see what it's all about. If you don't agree with it than you're clearly not a believer and it will be like that forever. Remember, you can't force someone to believe something, not even yourself. It's against our nature. It'd mean shutting down our brains.

EDIT: Pity how I wrote this huge comment and I get a thumbs down instantly. It must mean they only read "a lot of Christians never even glanced at the bible" and said I'm wrong. I envy your mentality fellow humans, or Christians, however you want me to call you. If I were stupider I'd be happier. I truly envy you.
 
here is the reality of the bible, it was written thousands of years ago, by many different authors. Think about what society was like back then, it hadnt yet evolved to the acceptance and understanding of others that we had today. Women were nowhere near equal to men, and this is reflected in the writtings of the bible- also homosexuality taken from that time frame wasn't understood like it is today. So To Take every thing in the bible as a written rule or ultimate wisdom is a huge mistake.
 
I agree with you. I was raised in a very christian and very strict home and I always wondered this too. My parents were always like this and that is bad because the Bible says but then they didn't follow everything. I don't get it either.
 
I understand what you're saying and it is true that there are many Christians who pick and choose what to believe, but the example you brought up isn't a very good one...

Galatians 3:28 "There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus."

No where is the biblical view of homosexuality anything but sin and being the characteristics of a sinful person.
 
Christians can read the Bible and understand it.

Every word of the Bible isn't written to every person, for all of time. Some of its commands are written to one person, for one period of time. Some are written to whole groups. Some are written to everyone.

Sin is defined by the Bible, and what constitutes a sin applies to everyone, for all time. Homosexuality meets this description, labeled as sinful both in the Old and the New Testaments.

Rules about what clothes to wear, what to eat (or not eat) were directed to the Jewish people as they wandered the desert under Moses' leadership, in order to keep them different than the polytheistic pagans they lived among, and as a way of maintaining ritual purity. Because the Jewish Temple no longer exists (destroyed by the Romans in 70 A.D.) only Orthodox Jews still think those rules apply to them today; others don't.

Rules about specific things to do were addressed to individuals. For instance, Jonah was told to go to Ninevah. All Jews and Christians don't go to Ninevah, because they know that command was not addressed to them.

You have to understand anything you read -- the Bible included -- within the cultural, historical, and textual context in which it appears.

and many "Christians" pick and choose (JWs mormons catholics gay-christians free thinkers) cuz they dont want to be wrong
 
I am a Christian and I have also struggled with this as well, having three friends who are about as flaming as you can get. Here is my, let me stress my, opinion based on Biblical knowledge. Jesus hung out with all of the low lifes, the sinners, tax collectors, prostitutes and yes the gays and lesbians. This is half of the reason he was hated by the pharisees so much. they felt all of those people were beyond saving and not worth the time or effort. Jesus on the other hand saw them as he sees all of us. with love and compassion and worth all the time in the world. The bible does not, at any time say Gay people are bad, its the behavior that it is talking about, nothing to do with the person themselves. I do not like gay bashers anymore than gays themselves, and when they do it in the name of Christianity it makes me want to puke. The first commandment of Jesus to his disciples when he was asked what is the most important thing we can do? Love the Lord your God with all of your heart, with all of your mind, and with all of your strength. the second was to love your neighbor....that includes gays and anyone else who falls away from the doctrine of Gods teachings. Does this mean that these people are bad in Gods eyes? Well i am not certain. Does he approve of their lifestyle? Not at all, but he still loves them and wants them to not continue to commit what he considers a sin. As far as Woman being put down, that was very big with jewish and Catholics, and that stems from the thinking of men from that time not a real reflection of what Jesus wanted or what it is supposed to be like. Read Ruth, old testament, Esther, old testament.....all prominent figures that made a huge difference in Christian religion. If you look at new testament you will see a different out look on woman and what woman are to men and how they should be treated. Proverbs, 1 corinthians, 2 corinthians, ephesians....the list goes on and on.
 
women are inferior to men, but a woman who chooses not to be, is not an abomination unto God, homosexuality is.
 
This was one of the benefits of the Blood-Dripping Propitiation. You now get to pick and choose what parts of the Bubble you will obey.
