concerned for my new betta?

So, i just got my Betta fish, Mr. Squid, 12 hours ago, and already i'm scared that i'm killing him. (not that extreme though :))

i have him in a 5 gallon tank with gravel, a silk plant, a filter, and a light, but no heater. and that's what's concerning me. I don't have a thermometer, but i felt Squid's water and it's freezing! he's been pretty lethargic (just resting in the plant) and i'm thinking that's why. i'm going to try to get a heater asap. UNLESS....

are there any tricks that you, as a betta owner, use to keep Mr. Betta warm without a heater? is a heater necessary? like i said, i have a lightbulb, and it's been on for the past 5 hours and it hasn't warmed up the water much. will Mr. Squid get sick if his water isn't warm enough?
thanks

Betta's are lethargic by nature, they are used to being in small quarters and wont swim around like other fish. It wouldnt hurt to get a heater, but just check to see what temperature the water is. If its somewhere between 68-82, then you really dont have much to worry about. Mr Squid will be fine.
