There are a few passages in the Prophets that claim that Israel will be scattered and then regrouped as a nation later on.

Given the near extinction of Israel, as a people, on countless occasions (including the Inquisition and the Holocaust), does this give credence to what the prophets wrote so long ago?
@Carlos - Have the native Americans regains the United States?

Psalms 53:6c, 6d teaches 'Jacob' synonymous parallelism Israel metaphorical framework the godly (peoples) who fear God.

They were scattered & regrouped *before* the arrival of the Messiah, but, they had once again become unfaithful before his arrival. That was why their religious leaders were the ones who instigated the Romans to murder him, though knowing full well that he was entirely innocent, and also that he fulfilled all of the prophecies they had been given about the Messiah to come. Bible prophecy foretold also that God would reject the nation of Israel if they turned against him, and he *did* reject them, when his son --their Messiah-- essentially died at their hands.

"...The Messiah himself put it this way: “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the killer of the prophets and stoner of those sent forth to her . . . Look! Your house is abandoned to you.” (Matthew 23:37, 38) Jesus’ statement came true when in 70 C.E., Roman legions destroyed Jerusalem along with its temple and priesthood..."

So, the Inquisition and the Holocaust are *not* indicated by any Bible prophecy. God's chosen people are those who accept & follow the teachings of his son, Jesus Christ, who fulfilled many prophecies that were given up to two hundred years before his birth.

When God allowed the nation of Israel --before Christ's arrival-- to be taken captive by worldly government, God had prophesied exactly how long their bondage would be for, and they were released exactly when the prophecy stated. However, there was no such prophecy of them being regathered after Rome destroyed Jerusalem, because that was the *complete* end of the covenant between God & that nation. He spiritually divorced them as a nation, for all time to come.

I wonder, in the past when people lived as tribes... was the idea of being scattered and regrouping something that happened more often? Did this happen to the Jews previously?

There back now in the land now...and they ain't going anywhere's. jesus loves you....

When that prophesy was made, Israel had already been scattered and regrouped a few times. The whole history of ancient Israel is one invasion and occupation after another, one diaspora and mass exile after another.

As for Israel coming back together in modern times, many Jewish scholars read it differently. Their view is that the Messiah will come to lead us into the Promised Land once WE grow up and learn to live together. When Israel was formed, basically as a solution to all the homeless Jews from Europe after WWII, many Jews believed that was not the modern nation of Israel predicted in the Old Testament, that it was an artificial man-made Israel, not one ordained by the Messiah.

It would seem so. In addition one may why would a group as successful at conquering and empire building as the Assyrians be totally vanished today, yet the Jews whom they annihilated still flourish? Why is the Egyptian Civilization consigned to the dust bin of history despite its vast achievements and yet the Jews are still a vibrant and living people? In modern times why has the NAZI party and movement been all but eradicated, yet the Jews whom the slaughtered by the million go on as a people? Would it not be because God keeps his promises across the millennia with this unique group of people? say what you will and mock if you must, but It could not be so otherwise.
