Connecting my Android to my PC?

I have the Droid Eris and whenever I connect it to my PC it will charge it but my computer doesn't even show that anything is connected to it. I want to put music on it but I can't if my computer doesn't see that something is plugged in? &In my notifications bar it doesn't show that it's connected to my PC either.

with my android when i connect it to pc the screen on the android tells me if i wand to mount it. so i then press the button to mount. after it's mounted i can then transfer files to and from the computer. yours should be similar.
