Could Glenn Beck possibly the the Antichrist? Or "an" anti-christ, if not the...
..."666" one? I ask this question as a religious agnostic, I have to admit. I don't generally fear the Antichrist today, although the notion of the "Beast" and the "Whore of Babylon" in Revelation did terrify me back in college, when I was an earnest and somewhat fearful Christian constantly reading about the Apocalypse.
But I recall some of the fearful prophesies that different Christian thinkers have made concerning the Antichrist, and I wonder if some of them might apply pretty well to Glenn Beck.
-- a man of enormous power and influence, who poses as a great religious leader who can unify the world
-- someone with many sincerely religious followers, a figure who could "deceive, if possible, even the elect."
-- someone preaching in the name of the Christian faith, but in fact promoting anti-Christian values: militarism, a scorn for social justice, hatred for others, a contempt for the poor and oppressed
-- a friend to the wealthiest merchants of the earth
-- a teller of lies, and therefore metaphorically related to the Devil, who is said to be the "father of lies."
I don't know if all of these "anti-Christ" characteristics fit Beck perfectly, but I think some do.
What do you think? Do you also see him as a potential antichrist, or does he seem to you like an apostle of peace & compassion & holiness?
