I want to buy a new lens for my nikon? (I don't understand lenses at all.)
I have a Nikon d80 and though I'd like to think I know how to use it pretty well I'd still like this lenses thing to be explained to me as if I'm stupid. Very, very stupid. Haha yes anyway I've been trying to answer this through old questions asked on YA but I've got such a head ache I'm just gonna be lazy and ask it all here. I'm fairly new to photography and my father's the one who bought the camera and the current lenses.
Okay so what I think I want, and um yeah I could be wrong here is a lens I could use for macro with the ability to go to a low aperture (like 1-2) and a higher zoom capability that's cheapish and can take a picture without blurring pretty close up. I don't know if there's more I'm suppose to want or say but... that's the gist of my knowledge. x_O
I'm not sure if I need separate lenses for all these effects... ^^;
The lens I'm using now says; 35-80mm 1:4 - 5.6 D
After a few hours of browsing the net I understand that on the lens something like 20-60 mm would give me a 3x mag. And sadly that's pretty much it. Words like focal length, focal point, and lens length (I can never figure out if a person if referring to the entire cylinder or just the glass) have flown right over my head. I still do not understand what these numbers measure though I know the higher numbers give greater magnification. Do these numbers only apply to the zoom or is there more to them?
As for telephoto and wide angle lenses I understand what they do and where they fit on the number scale (though I've no idea what the numbers are measuring *grimances*) but I'd like more explanation about their draw backs as I understand there are suppose to be some issues with distortion?
Can you only find certain aperture numbers with certain well I guess I'll call them mm #s. =B Or is it pretty much a anything you want goes sort of thing?
I want a macro lens. That would mean I want something around 40 mm and low apertures right? Alright scratch that what exactly makes the features of a macro lens better for it?
Can something be a macro lens as well as a telephoto/wide angle lens?
Also how are you suppose to know how close you can get to something before it blurs?
And can macro lenses only take pictures of things up close, making things further away blurry or does that depend...?
And then I'm reading some stuff about how depending on the sensors inside the cameras what they say the #s are might be different??!
*knocks head on keyboard *
If I decide to buy a new camera later on will I be able to use the same lenses for the same purpose?
And how do I know if a lens will fit my camera?
What are the lenses that are fixed and can't zoom better for...?
I'm sorry for how long this is and my cluelessness. I hope I'm making at least a little sense x3
Any help would be great
Ah crap I can't believe I wrote that much, no one is going to answer this.
Lol okay just explain anything you can and ignore me. ^^;
Ooh and cropped-sensor cameras v.s. full-frame sensor?
*slowly backs away*
