Could you love Erik, a.k.a. The Phantom of the Opera?

I first read Gaston Leroux's The Phantom of the Opera seven years ago when I was 15. I immediately thought it was a cool story and that Erik, the Phantom, was a very intriguing character. A few years later, I got a hold of Susan Kay's book, Phantom, and Erik became not only intriguing, but very... attractive. Yes, he was hideously ugly, but his passion, his talent, his mind, and his soul were so beautiful to me. I've since read the Leroux book five times and the Kay book three times. Over the years, I've become fairly obsessed with all things Phantom. But one thought has always lingered in the back of my mind: if I somehow went into the book, replacing Christine, and met Erik, could I actually fall in love with him? Could I actually stay with him and get married to him and spend the rest of my days as his wife? The truth is, I'm not really sure that I could. I know that I could have compassionate love for Erik and try my best to show him that love and kindness, but I don't think I could marry him. It's not because he is deformed and ugly (though, honestly, that would probably take some getting used to) but because he is so mentally unstable. He had a very traumatic past and it shows in his obsessive behavior and tendency to rage. He has mental and emotional wounds that I doubt could be cured by hugs and kisses.

So, how about you? If you were in the story as Christine, could you fall in love with Erik? Could stay with and marry him? And I'm not talking about hunky Gerard Butler Erik, I'm talking about living corpse Leroux Erik. What do you think?
