Crate Training My Dog? A Question....?

I recently adopted an 18 month old dog from a no kill shelter and I didn't have a crate. A friend of mine gave me one (that was used), I'm 99% sure Lily (my dog) has never been crate trained and I want it to be as non-traumatic for both of us. Should it be washed out before I try to get her used to it?? Any other tips are greatly appreciated!
