Creating a network with a phone cord and two computers..?

I want to know how I can connect my gateway which has windows 2000 to my lap top which has vista via just a phone line between the two. All I have is those tools to work with and I can't even get my cable to work on the 2000 clunk, i cant even pull up the Local Area Connection icon. So help meout with this network.
