Customizing/painting PU boots (synthetic materials)?

For leather shoes, some people use acetone to get the waxy layer off, and then paint over that. Is it the same way for synthetic/faux leather shoes? Is there a special kind of paint I can use to apply directly over that is waterproof and will stay without taking the waxy layer off. Thanks.
