I'm sure Stephanie Meyer, Anne Rice, and Laurell K Hamilton are great authors, but I was wondering if there are any dark/gothic/erotic/horror novels out there that DO NOT involve sexy tormented vampires. Not that I have anything against vampires and the supernatural (I graduated straight from R.L. Stine's Fear Street series to Poppy Z. Brite's WTF novels way back in middle school), but I'm looking for dark novels that are a little more on the realistic side.
"Perfume" (Suskind) was one of the greatest novels I've read in my entire life, and I wish "The Red and the Black" had sequels, but since books like that don't come along every week, I was hoping someone could suggest an author/genre/niche that might be remotely similar. Vampires need not apply.
