DC Motor effect? Spinning related?

I have a small DC motor taken out from a toy car. The two terminal wires are intact. When I spin the rotor by my fingers, it spins freely. But when I connect the two terminals with each other and spin the rotor, it does not spin freely. It simply stops after 1-2 rotations. Can someone explain this phenomenon. I have seen this phenomenon in all the motors.
